The most typical version of Modernism, namely Art Nouveau, is to be found in the Boscolo Hotel in Prague, with all the atmosphere and tension of Modernism.
The building’s sober and functional spaces and formal connections with classical ideas are approached by clearly Renaissance decoration.
The large hall features discreet beige, gray and white colors on the ceilings and friezes; the dominant ornamental elements are the alabaster columns, the stucco work and the golden interlacement, cupids and heraldic crests. A sumptuous staircase, with late-XIX century wrought iron balustrades, leads to the upper floors, and has pairs of slender alabaster columns surmounted by Corinthian capitals. The original brass chandeliers, which are in a clear and elegant Deco style, complete the interesting atmosphere.
The bank’s old strong-room, turned into the fascinating Cigar Bar, is an unusual element: ten reinforced cabinets and the ceiling screened with details of steel sheets hold a variety of brands of whisky, cognac, port and other bottles with prestigious labels, for the guests’ total pleasure.
